Celebrating May Day on The Suffolk Coast

Picture the scene - a community gathering on the village green, Morris dancing, children weaving themselves around the maypole and the distant strains of a brass band…

May Day celebrations date back to Anglo-Saxon times and the pagan festival of Beltane which supposedly marks the beginning of summer (even though summertime doesn’t officially begin until June!).

It wasn’t until 1978 that May Day became a national bank holiday and was nearly scrapped in 2011 in favour of a United Kingdom Day which would fall in October!

Whilst there is undoubtedly a sprinkling of traditional May Day celebrations planned across towns and villages of The Suffolk Coast this year, there is also a whole host of exciting and diverse bank holiday weekend activities lined up for all the family to enjoy!

Saturday 30th April – Monday 2nd May - Marvellous Minibeasts – Africa Alive, Kessingland

Celebrate the bank holiday with a weekend of bug-tastic fun! With lots of animal handling, a prize trail and special display.

Saturday 30th April - Card Making Workshop – Moth Crafts, Bungay

Head to Moth Crafts in Bungay for a morning of creative card making - 10.30am - 12.30pm

Sunday 1st May - Vintage Market, Snape Maltings

Love all things Vintage?  Then head to Snape Maltings, Suffolk for this wonderful Vintage Market!

Sunday 1st May - The 46th Ipswich to Felixstowe Historic Vehicle Fun Run

Head along to the Promenade in Felixstowe, Suffolk on 1st May 2016 to witness these exquisite old vehicles From Buses to Cars of all ages.

Sunday 1st May - Beccles Antiques Street Market

There’s a chance to nab a few priceless vintage delights at the Beccles Antiques Market. Make a day of it and rest your weary feet at one of the highly acclaimed eating establishments in this pretty market town.
