Emma Hibbert, Head Of Corporate Affairs, Adnams, Southwold
We spoke to Emma Hibbert at Adnams about the pub walk packs Adnams created with Suffolk Coast and Heaths.
How did the Pub Walk Pack come about?
Adnams had been working with the Suffolk Coast for a number of years before we were approached by Nick (Collinson) who wanted to find an innovative and engaging way of celebrating the 40th anniversary of the AONB. Pub walks seemed an obvious choice because so often people begin and end their walks at the pub.
Do you have a favourite walk?
It’s hard to choose my favourite walk however I’d probably have to say the Eastbridge route which takes in Dunwich Heath and Minsmere Nature Reserve. The Eel’s foot is halfway round and it’s the perfect place to stop. What the pub walks pack really shows is that there is such a variety of routes on offer here – from coast to heathland, field and marsh.
What does the AONB mean to Adnams?
Everyone at Adnams feels very lucky to be based in such a beautiful part of the world. For Adnams tourism is a big part of what we do and that doesn’t just mean encouraging people in from far away – we also encourage local people to visit a variety of pubs in their local area and discover something new.
How did you choose the walks you did?
It was great fun choosing the pubs we did for the pub walks. In the end we identified all the Adnams pubs in the AONB and then Suffolk Coast and Heaths ‘experts’ devised the walks and carried out the research for the leaflets. Volunteers carried out the walks – and we’re very grateful for their help!
The pub walks packs have been very popular and we already need to print more. We’d like to expand the idea to cycle routes. There’s nothing better than enjoying a hearty pub lunch after a long cycle through the countryside so the format should work well.
The Pub Walk Packs are available to purchase from Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB Unit priced £4.99. Individual guides can be downloaded at www.suffolkcoastandheaths.org/downloads. The guides feature a selection of 25 specially chosen walks, linked to 29 Adnams pubs in, or close to, the AONB. Profits from each pack go towards supporting conservation projects in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
