Guide to the Dunwich Dynamo 2016

Love cycling? Then you’ll love the Dunwich Dynamo.

Now in its 24th year, this night time ride from Hackney to Dunwich, on the Suffolk Coast, is a must in the summer calendar for many cyclists.

The 200km route starts at London Fields in Hackney and is always on the Saturday night nearest the full moon in July. That means this year’s event gets underway between 8 – 9pm on Saturday 16th July.

It’s not a race – although some will certainly be going for it!

This is an unsupported event so entrants need to carry plenty of inner tubes, tools, batteries for their lights, food & drink. There is a feeding station at Sudbury Fire Station but there’s no guarantees that there’ll be enough for all participants, but profits from the sale of refreshments will go to The Fire Fighters Charity.

If you arrive at the station and too late for a snack, look out for some enterprising householders who have set up food stalls in their front gardens – but remember bring some cash!

The ‘Dun Run’ or ‘DD’, as the Dunwich Dynamo is also known, attracts over 2000 cyclists, so although maps of the route only cost £1 you’d be pretty safe just following the lights of the cyclists ahead of you!

After your long ride, and probably with a slightly sore rear-end, most cyclists will arrive at Dunwich beach around 7am, and whilst many cool off with a dip in the sea, what better way to end the journey and start the day than with breakfast at The Ship.
