The Anchor At Walberswick In Top 50 Gastro Pub Awards

The Anchor in Walberswick has been awarded 36th position in the Top 50 Gastro Pub Awards 2014. The “Budweiser Budvar” Top 50 Gastropub Awards are prestigious, voted for by the sponsor’s panel of judges. The panel includes gastropub operators (who can’t vote for their own pubs!), food writers, catering development managers, executive chefs, celebrity and top hospitality industry chefs, pub guide editors, industry chiefs and food operators all organised by the Publican’s Morning Advertiser: “This really is the industry’s choice”. Food writer and Great British Menu critic, Matthew Fort presented the 2014 awards.

Mark Dorber said: “We are thrilled to be number 36 in the roll call of Britain’s finest gastropubs, sponsored by my favourite Bohemian brewery Budvar. My wife Sophie has been the inspiration and drive behind everything we have achieved here. She continues to keep the pot boiling and spirits high. We source well and locally and enjoy the dialogue with farmers, growers, brewers and distillers. Good pubs beget and deserve good customers. Thank you to all our customers, friends and suppliers.”

The Anchor sits by the sea in the outstandingly beautiful village of Walberswick just south of Southwold, home of the iconic Adnams Sole Bay Brewery. Mark and Sophie are sensitive about the need to create a lively social hub in our village community and strive to make their style of inn-keeping vibrant and relevant. Good food plays a vital part in what the Anchor does along with keeping the fire stoked from 8am until late in winter, having buns and hot chocolate on the bar to warm the children, dog walkers, ramblers and early morning bathers.

Head Chef, Andrew Storer recently joined the team in September 2013 after moving up from London to his native Suffolk, having worked previously for many years for Michel Roux Junior and Roux Fine Dining. Andrew said: “It is an honour to be nominated in the Top 50 Gastro Awards. I am enjoying working with the team to write new menus, improve our offering and use tip top local produce to create great flavour combinations as well as a place for fresh baked pastries and breads.”

Luke Murphy, front of house manager said: “The award is for all of us at The Anchor who pull together as a team and work hard to make people feel special and have a fantastic experience, be it in the bar for a light bite or the restaurant for dinner.”
