The Best Things in Life are Free!

Great days out on The Suffolk Coast don’t have to cost a small fortune, in fact some of them are completely FREE!

We have found a selection of free attractions nestled around The Suffolk Coast that won’t cost you a penny for admission, so you can save your hard earned cash for an ice cream treat or a bite of lunch too!

Customers flock from far and wide to visit the Amber Shop and Museum in the stunning coastal town of Southwold, but it’s also the only museum dedicated entirely to the history of Amber in Great Britain. Read through the fascinating story-boards explaining exactly how this precious gem was formed around a million years ago and check out exhibits and carvings from around the globe. The museum opens 9am – 5pm Monday to Saturday and 11am – 4pm Sundays and Bank Holidays. The shop has an amazing display of Amber jewellery and carvings so beware, although entry to the museum is free, you might just be tempted to make a purchase!

Beccles and District Museum

The bustling market town of Beccles is steeped in local history and boasts, not one but two contrasting museums. Take a step back in time to the Victorian era and beyond at Beccles and District Museum in Ballygate (NR34 9ND). Displayed here are antique toys, costumes, items from the old gaol, and memorabilia from the sailing wherries. This museum opens seasonally April – October.

Museums aren’t everyone’s cup of tea - perhaps you prefer admiring the glories of some of The Suffolk Coast’s beautiful gardens… Wooten’s Gardens in Wenhaston (IP19 9HD), near Halesworth boast a breath taking display of traditional favourites. The Gardens open 10am -4pm Tuesday to Sunday (April to October). Admission is by donation only.

Henstead Exotic Gardens

If your taste in flowers and plants is more unusual then head off to Henstead Exotic Garden (NR34 7LD) where you’ll be treated to 2 acres a palms, Mediterranean and jungle plants as well as streams, ponds and a Thai covered pavilion.

The open day is Sunday 20th September 11am -4pm and whilst there is a small charge of £3.50 for admission, children do go free!
