The Crown Wins Best Dining Pub In Suffolk
Situated on Southwold’s busy High Street amongst bakeries, cafés and independent shops is The Crown Hotel, a warm and lively hotel, wine bar, pub and restaurant that, according to the Good Pub Guide, is the best dining pub in Suffolk!
The Good Pub Guide is a must-read for all lovers of top quality pub food and drink. Each year the Good Pub Guide releases a comprehensive list of the best pubs in the UK, sorted into various award categories. One such category is the County Dining Pub awards, which are always keenly contested, especially in Suffolk. But in the end it is the pub-goers that have the final say; the winners are chosen from nominations made by 2,000 loyal correspondents, which are then backed up by editorial inspections.
So why did The Crown Hotel get the pub-goers vote? Well, it seems to be a combination of comfort, atmosphere, fine drinks and, of course, The Crown’s “excellent, imaginative food.” The menu is simple and stylish, full of well-crafted, flavourful dishes with a strong prevalence of local ingredients including East Coast crab, wild Suffolk mushrooms, East Anglian steak and Dingley Bell pork. The menu changes slightly from day-to-day, depending on what produce is available.
As the authors of the Good Pub Guide explain, it’s this use of fresh, local produce that makes all the difference: “Customers now demand – and receive – high-quality home-cooked food using the best, local and seasonal produce available,” they write. And, confirming something many pub-goers have long suspected, “The food in the top dining pubs is certainly equal to that in the best restaurants, and often better…”
