The Booming Bittern

The Bittern is a rare and elusive old bird, difficult to spot as it camouflages itself amongst the reedbeds.

Here in Suffolk we’re lucky enough to have a small but growing resident population of the endangered Bittern, with the wetland habitat RSPB Minsmere on the Suffolk Coast a crucial factor in their success here.

Whilst they might avoid being seen, Bitterns certainly don’t care about being heard, using a distinctive loud booming sound to mark their territory, which can be heard for several miles around!

If you fancy experiencing the booming Bittern for yourself, why not take a visit to RSPB Minsmere this summer. With a new Wild Zone and Wild Wood Adventure, along with a new Island Mere Hide perfect for Bittern-spotting, it’s a great place for the whole family.
