National Trust Sutton Hoo
This hauntingly beautiful 255 acre estate, with far-reaching views over the River Deben is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time.
Sutton Hoo is where you will find stories of kings, mysterious mounds and buried treasure. It is the site of an Anglo-Saxon royal burial site dating back 1300 years. In 1939 on the eve of the Second World War, archaeologists made a remarkable discovery as they opened the largest burial mound and found an undisturbed Anglo-Saxon ship burial.

You can also visit Tranmer House, the former home of Edith Pretty to see images of the excavation of the burial ship and find out more about this wonderful archaeological story.
With the beautiful countryside, woodland and open fields at Sutton Hoo, it’s a great place for wildflower and wildlife spotting, just one of the many outdoor adventures to be had during a visit.
There are seasonal family walking trails to enjoy, including the Design and Legend sculpture trail, and other walks around the landscape including woodland walks with views across the River Deben. You can even follow in the footsteps of the Anglo-Saxons along the route they are believed to have dragged the ship to the Royal Burial Ground or enjoy panoramic views across the Royal Burial Ground from the 17-metre viewing tower.
This autumn, why not come along for a day out? Enjoy a family picnic in one of the many picnic spots, indulge in a hot chocolate from King's River Café and stock up on great reads from the ever-popular secondhand bookshop. Little ones will love the outdoor play area, too!
Events at Sutton Hoo this autumn include family tours, wildlife rambles, workshops and the very popular Tales by Torchlight, which offers the opportunity of enjoying Sutton Hoo in the evening, accompanied by Anglo-Saxon storytellers - all before warming up with a hot drink and flapjack/brownie in the café.
