Whether you’re a seasoned antiques hunter, or just looking for a fun day out, here are a few top tips when buying antiques:
- Always ask for a discount – there’s nearly always room for negotiation.
- Always handle the goods and inspect them for damage.
- Payment – Once you’ve agreed on a price, get out your card or cheque book, then ask if there’s a further discount for cash.
- Always get a receipt … Even if you pay cash! Make sure your receipt lists the items age, the material, any damage or restoration and its value.
- Research – Get to know some of the marks of authenticity on antiques.
- And finally…Beware of reproductions, fakes and forgeries - they can very good and there will be some out there!
