Picture the scene - a community gathering on the village green, Morris dancing, children weaving themselves around the maypole and the distant strains of a brass band…
May Day celebrations date back to Anglo-Saxon times and the pagan festival of Beltane which supposedly marks the beginning of summer (even though summertime doesn’t officially begin until June!).
It wasn’t until 1978 that May Day became a national bank holiday and was nearly scrapped in 2011 in favour of a United Kingdom Day which would fall in October!
Whilst there is undoubtedly a sprinkling of traditional May Day celebrations planned across towns and villages of The Suffolk Coast this year, there is also a whole host of exciting and diverse bank holiday weekend activities lined up for all the family to enjoy!
