Suffolk Walking Festival 2018 Roundup!

As the summer weather settles in, we look forward to getting out and exploring the stunning coastland, heathland and countryside of The Suffolk Coast.


The Suffolk Walking Festival is the perfect opportunity to explore on foot; with over 120 walks and events it's the biggest festival to date! 

Whether you're a seasoned rambler, a family looking to enjoy the great outdoors, a GeoCaching enthusiast or want to improve your fitness, there's a walk for you.

Running from 12th May - 3rd June, we've rounded up the Festival walks that are taking place on The Suffolk Coast.

12th May - Discover Kessingland

Time: 10.30am - 12pm

Location: Beach Car Park. Church Road, Kessingland, NR33 7SF

Take in the fresh air of the east coast on a walk at Kessingland. We will follow pavements and firm uneven ground on a mix of grassland, sand and dunes, stopping occasionally to take in the view and refuel. By the end of the walk you'll know a lot more about Kessingland and all it has to offer!

12th May - Launch Jaunt - Two Mile Two Church Walk

Time: 11:00 - 13:00 

Location: St Peter's Brewery, St Peters Hall, Bungay, NR35 1NQ

This gentle walk takes you from St. Peter's Hall the churches of St. Michael and St. Peter. At the end of the walk you can enjoy a tour of St. Peter's Brewery and experience a "Tutored Tasting" with a complimentary bottle of St. Peter's Beer to take home!

12th May - Sizewell Dawn Chorus Walk

Time: 04:30 - 07:00 

Location: Kenton Hills Car park, Lovers lane, Leiston, IP16 4UP

On National Dawn Chorus Day - join reserve wardens for a guided walk to listen to the glorious dawn chorus around Sizewell Belts reserve, a secluded landscape of grazing marsh, reedbed and wet woodland intersected by dykes and tree belts.

12th May - Launch Jaunt - Five Mile Circular Walk

Time: 11:00 - 14:00 

Location: St Peter's Brewery, St Peters Hall, Bungay, NR35 1NQ

Following the paths and tracks around WWII Flixton Airfield, this walk passes through ancient Abbey Wood, a Site of Specific Scientific Interest that includes the remains of an Augustinian Priory. On completion of the walk you will take a tour of St. Peter's Brewery with a "Tutored Tasting" and a complimentary bottle of St. Peter's Beer to take home!

13th May - East Anglia's Valley of the Kings

Try one of the new walking routes at National Trust Sutton Hoo with archaeologist Angus. Discover the landscape and unlock its stories and emerge up at the Royal Burial Ground and learn more about the Kings who made this land their final resting place.

13th May - Ipswich West End to Waterfront

Time: 10:30 - 14:30 

Location: Opposite the Inkerman Pub, Norwich Road, Ipswich, IP1 4BX

Discover the geography of Ipswich and the historical development of the town, from the grand houses of the west-end hills to the east and factory workers cottages. Take in the waterfront developments, from the 19th Century heavy industry to modern marinas and the University. This is a town guided walk with opportunities to stop and take photos. There are two rather steep hills.

13th May - Fringe Event - Iconic Images Southwold Icons

Join Suffolk-based professional photographer Phil Morley on this photography workshops which captures the beauty of the Suffolk landscape. "Southwold Icons" will centre of the town's famous Pier and colourful Beach Huts, looking at perspectives and depths of field. This is a very popular event so booking early is advised!

14th May - Outstanding Landscapes - Peninsula Ramble

Location: Suffolk Food Hall, Wherstead, IP9 2AB

Enjoy a circular walk with the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) team around the historic parkland and farmland of the western Shotley Peninsula, ending up with cream tea and refreshments at the Suffolk Food Hall. In aid of the AONB Community and Conservation Fund, supporting community led conservation projects across this outstanding landscape.

15th May - Fringe Event - Suffolk Sketchbook

Time: 10:00 - 14:00 

Location: Snape Maltings, Snape, Suffolk, IP17 1SP

Join Suffolk-based professional artist, Carole Massey, on a drawing adventure on iconic Snape Maltings, capturing the aura of one of Britain’s areas of outstanding natural beauty. All abilities are welcome, please dress for the outdoors and bring a camping chair. The ticket price includes tea or coffee on arrival and lunch in the Concert Hall Restaurant. Art supplies are provided.

16th May - The Nature Reserves of Woodbridge

This walk encompass three of Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s reserves; Bromeswell Green, Foxburrow Farm, and Hutchison’s Meadow. A unique opportunity to find out more about these wildlife havens on the edge of Woodbridge, your ticket price also includes tea and cake!

16th May - Magical Minsmere: A Stroll Around the Famous Scrape

Join the RSPB guides on a gentle stroll around Minsmere's famous Scrape and spot nesting gulls, terns and avocets.

16th May - Wilderness as Far as the Eye Can See

Time: 09:30 - 13:30 

Location: Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve, Burnt Hill Lane, Lowestoft , NR33 8HU

An unmissable chance to see and hear about the exciting changes happening in the Suffolk Broads to create a stand-out, 1,000-acre destination nature reserve. You'll be guided across Carlton Marshes followed by a boat trip on the Waveney Princess, returning to Oulton Broad for stunning views across the wetland landscape. The circular trip finishes with a ¾ mile stroll back to the Trusts Education Centre. Ferry and boat trip and refreshments are included in the ticket price.

18th May - Shotley Point Stroll

Time: 12:00 - 13:30 

Location: Bristol Arms (meet outside), Bristol Hill, Shotley Gate, IP9 1PU

A scenic walk from the Bristol Arms in Shotley Gate, around the Marina with views over the River Orwell to the biggest container port in the UK at Felixstowe. You will continue through the outskirts of the village up to a fine panorama over the River Stour, then down to a riverside path through a delightful Heritage Park, before returning to the Bristol Arms overlooking Harwich.

18th May - Pepper's Wash & the Roman Road

Time: 10:00 - 13:00 

Location: The Elms Car Park, New Road, Framlingham, IP13 9HW

This 7.5 mile walk starts at Framlingham's Castle Mere heading towards the location of the old Hunting Park that once surrounded the Castle. You will traverse the old Roman Road that originally ran from Colchester to Dunwich, follow ancient footpaths through Pepper’s Wash, the site of a Roman settlement, walk towards Saxstead and then pass near to New Street Farm where Nicholas Danforth set out prior to sailing to America in 1636.

18th May - Benacre Dawn Chorus Walk

Time: 04:00 - 06:00 

Location: Green Lane Car Park (off Mill Lane), Covehithe, NR34 7JL

A very early start, guided walk through Benacre National Nature Reserve on the Suffolk coast, much of which sits on private property. You will visit Holly Grove, an ancient woodland, to hear the spring dawn chorus, one of the joys of early mornings anywhere. The birds start singing early, which is the best time to hear them before the human world wakes up and drowns them out!

19th May - Challenge Walk Day 1 - Welcome to the Sandlings

Time: 09:00 - 18:00 

Location: Southwold Pier, North Parade, Southwold, IP18 6BN

On day 1 you will leave Southwold Pier and head inland to cross the River Blyth before descending towards Westwood Marshes and Dunwich Forest. The day ends at the iconic setting of Dunwich Cliffs with its sweeping views around Sole Bay.

19th May - Introduction to Nordic Walking - Carlton Marsh

Time: 10:30 - 12:00 

Location: Carlton Marsh Nature Reserve, Burnt Hill Lane, Carlton Colville, NR33 8HU

Learn how walking with poles the Nordic Way can improve your walking! After a 30-minute introduction to Nordic Walking, you will head out from Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve, taking in the scenery of Oulton Broad to Nicholas Everitt Park where you can purchase refreshments or use the public conveniences, before returning to the Nature Reserve. The footpath will be firm but can be uneven at times.

20th May - Wellbeing Walk - Minsmere

Location: Discovery Centre, RSPB Minsmere, Sheepwash Lane, Saxmundham, IP17 3BY

A unique walk from the Discovery Centre with a 30-minute session of Mindfulness followed by a 1.5 hour guided walk around RSPB Minsmere, returning to the centre for 30 minutes of gentle chair based yoga and relaxation. Enliven your senses and help attune your body and mind into the magic of this wonderful coastal nature reserve.

20th May - Challenge Walk Day 2 - Cliffs to Marshes

Time: 09:00 - 18:00 

Location: National Trust Dunwich Heath, Dunwich, Saxmundham, IP17 3DJ

On day 2 you will leave Dunwich and the coast to head inland past the famous Eels Foot pub and through Sizewell Belts to re-emerge on the shore. In the afternoon, walk through North Warren Nature Reserve with its resident Marsh Harriers and Bitterns to cross-country to Snape. You will end the day at Snape Maltings, home to the world-famous Aldeburgh Music.

20th May & 3rd June - Fringe Event - Beachcombing for Beginners 

Time: 10:00 - 16:00 

Location: Bawdsey Village Hall, The Street, Bawdsey, IP12 3AH

Join Kate Osborne of "Beach Bonkers" on a fascinating beachcombing workshop. You will spend the morning looking for your own treasures at East Lane, Bawdsey. In the afternoon you will look at your finds, learning what they tell you about our shingle beaches. Kate will provide some top beachcombing tips (the best beaches for particular shells, seaglass, fossils etc) and there will be a chance to see her private beachcombing collection.

Please be aware:

- The course and beachcomb will go ahead regardless of the weather

- There is a short steep slope to access the beach. This takes less than a minute and someone who used a stick for walking managed it okay.

- Tea, coffee and cake are provided. Please bring a packed lunch.

21st May - Beccles to Oulton Broad South - East Suffolk Lines Station to Station

Time: 10:30 - 16:00 

Location: Beccles Railway Station, Beccles, NR34 9QU

This walk follows part of the Angles Way along the River Waveney and adjacent marshes from Beccles Station to Oulton Broad South Station. The walk will start from Beccles Station at 10.30am. There are several stiles near the end of the route, so it's not suitable for buggies, but dogs on leads are welcome.

21st May - Challenge Walk Day 3 - Forests and Heaths

Time: 09:00 - 18:00 

Location: Snape Maltings, Snape, IP17 1SP

Day 3 sees you walking from the marshes of Snape to the vast forests of Tunstall and Rendlesham via the other worldly landscape of Staverton Woods. You will walk into the heathlands of Sutton, ending the day at National Trust Sutton Hoo, the burial place of an Anglo Saxon King.

Distance: 17+ miles

22nd May - Challenge Walk Day 4 - Kings, Creeks & Orangeries

Time: 09:00 - 18:00 

Location: National Trust Sutton Hoo, Woodbridge, IP12 3DJ

The last day of The 2018 Challenge Walk is a long hike from the burial site of an Anglo Saxon King, to the tranquillity of Martlesham Creek and into Ipswich where you end at Holywells Park's beautiful Orangery with prizes for our Challenge Walk Winners and a celebration for all!

23rd May - Sea, Heath & Fen - A Sizewell Circular Walk

Time: 09:00 - 16:00 

Location: Sizewell Beach Car Park, Sizewell Gap, Leiston, IP16 4UH

From Sizewell Beach you will walk inland to the river Alde and on to Aldeburgh, before walking by the sea. You will then head inland to Thorpeness, going through RSPB's North Warren Reserve, before walking along the coast back to Sizewell.

25th May & 1st June - Westleton Heath Nightjar Walk

Time: 20:30 - 22:30 

Location: Westleton Heath Nature Reserve Car Park, Westleton, Saxmundham , IP17 3DB

Join the Ranger from Natural England on a twilight walk around the mysterious and magical heathland of Westleton Heath National Nature Reserve. The heath's star bird of the summer is the nightjar, which has the most extraordinary calls of any bird; a loud, purring trill that is a feature of summer late evenings once the sun has set behind Westleton village. You may also be lucky and see bats and glow-worms.

26th May - Fringe Event - Mindfulness and Nature

Mindfulness meditation is a discipline of living in the here and now that enables practitioners to live life without stress. Mindfulness and nature is a very relaxing combination. This is a quiet meditative walk suitable for all abilities and led by an experienced teacher through the beautiful wild heathland of Dunwich.

26th May - Two Rivers Walk - Shotley

Time: 11:00 - 13:30 

Location: Shotley Village Hall Car Park, Main Road, Shotley, IP9 1PB

A circular walk around Shotley along parts of the River Stour and the River Orwell. You will pass through 'Golden Wood' through to Shotley Church and Shotley Marina with unique views of the Port of Felixstowe. From the Marina,  walk via Shotley Heritage Park to the site of old brickyards, finally returning to the Shotley Rose car park.

27th May - Scenic Heights and Saintly Sites

Time: 11:00 - 15:00

A circular walk from Bungay through the rural landscape of the 'Saints' and South Elmham with commentary on the features of the landscape and historic sites and churches, and information on trees and wild flowers of the region.  Enjoy a mid-way break for refreshments (and toilets) at St Peter's Hall (or bring a packed lunch).

27th May - Beccles to Beccles in Suffolk & Norfolk

Location: Waveney District Council Car Park, Quay North, Fen Lane, Beccles, NR34 9BH

You will circumnavigate the Norfolk side of the River Waveney from Beccles Iron Bridge to Geldeston Locks for a pub lunch, before heading into Suffolk and back to Beccles. This route can get muddy around Geldeston if it rains!

29th May - A "Walk in the Park" at Nicholas Everitt Park

Perfect for primary school children, this is part of Lowestoft Rising’s “Walk In The Park” Golden Mile series of walks. This walk starts in Nicholas Everitt Park, consist of a mile walking, and ends at the Lowestoft Museum for a special children-friendly visit. There will also be Fun in the Park activities for both children and parents.

30th May - A Walk in the Park

An 18-mile figure of eight walk through Redisham Park and past the Dragon House. You will stop for a picnic lunch after 12 miles, and in the afternoon walk over North Green and the Water Meadows for another 6 miles.

31st May - As Night Descends... Family Evening Wildlife Walk

Discover the wildlife of the marshes as it prepares for night with this gentle walk around Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve with Suffolk Wildlife Trust staff. A walk for families with children with a suggested minimum age 6 years due to length and duration of walk.

31st May - Sparrows Nest Park

The walk starts at Sparrow's Nest Park, consist of a mile walking, and ends at the Maritime Museum for a special children-friendly visit. 1st June - Farm & Rivers Walk

Time: 10:00 - 13:30 

Location: The Shipwreck Bar & Restaurant (outside), Shotley Marina, Shotley Gate, Ipswich, IP9 1QJ

Commencing at The Shipwreck, you will head along the River Stour towards the village of Erwarton and experience fine views of an RSPB reserve, the small hamlet of The Brickyard, views to Parkeston Quay and see unrivalled wading bird feeding grounds at low tide. Along the walk there are extensive expanses of salt marsh and inland small woods, including Kiln Queach and Alderton’s Grove, and the traditionally grazed Shotley Marshes. The walk ends with fine views across the River Orwell with the Port of Felixstowe in the distance, before returning to The Shipwreck.

2nd June - Introductions to Nordic Walking at The Oval

Time: 10:30 - 12:00 

Location: Denes Oval, North Denes, Whapload Road, Lowestoft, NR32 1UH

Learn all about Nordic Walking with a 30-minute introduction before taking in the scenery at Britain's most easterly point, walking up to Belle Vue Park and along to Gunton Cliffs, followed by a walk along the promenade for refreshments. The route will be mostly on pavement but will include some steps and a hill.
