Tuck into a Beach Feast at First Light Festival

Acclaimed Suffolk chef, Nicola Hordern, is creating a bespoke menu of 'beach feasts' to serve to revellers at the free, 24-hour, non-stop summer festival, First Light.

Taking place on Lowestoft's sandy South Beach on June 18/19, First Light Festival is the only beach festival in the whole country - it is perfect for anyone seeking adventure, joy and incredible food!

Nicola's delicious dishes are ticketed and include:

Spanish lamb and honey stew or whole roast cauliflower with chermoula, tahini sauce, and spiced chickpeas for the Saturday evening meal, as people prepare for the over-night music events and activities. £25 per head.

Lowestoft kipper kedgeree or lentil and bean dhal with raita and flatbread for the Sunday morning brunch. £8 per head.

The menu has been designed to work in sympathy with the local setting and heritage, as well as with the changes to the light and atmosphere as the festival moves through its 24-hour cycle.

Previously, included in national broadsheet top food lists, Nicola loves cooking for crowds, using foraged ingredients and local produce. Soon to take up a new role at a soon-to-open venue, The Canteen at The Old Hospital in Southwold, Nicola is special not just because of the quality of her cooking, but also her understanding of food and its role in connecting people to the land. Her farm-to-fork approach results in an all-round inspiring foodie experience.

The festival is open to all, so the public can enjoy an affordable fun-filled weekend, whilst discovering Nicola's food. In fact, tucking into her dishes on the beach while immersed in the transitions of nature this midsummer promises to be an uplifting, inexpensive foodie experience.

Nicola switched her former career in accounting to become a farm-to-fork chef at 44 years old. She trained at Ballymaloe Cookery School and completed a stage at the legendary restaurant, Chez Panisse, in California. She then worked at Jeremy Lee’s Quo Vadis before moving to Suffolk to become head chef at Darsham Nurseries. Nicola has recently taken on a new role in Southwold as mentioned above, where she plans to offer delicious meals every Sunday on a pay-what-you-can basis.
