The Lettering Arts Centre

The Lettering Arts Centre is the home of the Lettering Arts Trust, an independent charity which champions Britain's rich heritage in the lettering arts.

The Lettering Arts Trust encourages Britain's long tradition in the lettering arts to flourish. The gallery hosts a critically-acclaimed exhibition programme, artist lectures, lettering demonstrations and a variety of lettering workshops. The shop sells a range of beautiful lettered artworks and gifts from statement works of art to small gifts.

The Lettering Arts Trust helps the public to commission lettered art on stone, wood or metal for memorial, commemoration, house or garden from a register of the finest letter carvers in the country.

The gallery and shop is open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 11am until 5pm, from 24th March to 22nd December 2017.

Exhibition Programme

Friday 23rd March - Friday 28th May - 'Masters of Invention'

This exhibition looks at the evolution of graffiti from the tombs of Egypt to the walls and subways of the modern metropolis. The Gallery is showing a collection of paintings and sculptures by some of the most influential graffiti artists of the past 40 years, alongside sketches and photographs to build a powerful picture of 40,000 years of creative and audacious handmade lettering.

Friday 2nd June - Monday 2nd October - 'Orchestra of Letters'

The most important collection of new works by the UK's foremost lettering artists in many years. It celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Snape Maltings Concert Hall Gallery. 35 artists will explore the symbiosis between music and lettering, creating works across the full spectrum of the art form to challenge and inspire. Pieces include verses carved into stone, Britten's 1942 statement to the War Board printed by letterpress and three-dimensional letter sculptures that the viewer can play to make their own music. We're planning many events, demonstrations and workshops to enhance public appreciation of this major showcase.

Friday 17th November - Friday 22nd December - 'Christmas Showcase'

This exhibition celebrates letters in all their fascinating forms. From limited-edition typography and calligraphy prints, to hand- engraved glassware and hand-carved stone, you'll find a tempting array of gifts from stocking fillers to presents to last a lifetime. This collection features pieces designed and crafted by lettering artists with inscriptions to amuse or uplift, as ornaments, wall art and garden features.
