Aldeburgh Voices

Vaughan Williams, Poulenc and Martin.

Blythburgh’s simple, lofty grandeur is the perfect setting for some of the most beautiful sacred music from the early twentieth century in a programme where the spirit of ancient plainchant and polyphony seems embellished and re-imagined.

In Vaughan Williams’ mass for two choirs, the intricate interlocking voice parts and modal harmonies of English Tudor music is channelled into a work of serenity and grace, whilst Frank Martin’s mass, largely completed in the same year, uses the spatial separation and richly layered textures of his voices to ravishing effect.
