Bach: St John Passion

Dramatic chamber performance by baroque ensemble Solomon's Knot.

Written in 1724 for the Good Friday service at Leipzig’s Nikolaikirche, Bach’s St. John Passion was by far the most dramatic, rich and complex musical interpretation of the passion story the Leipzig audience had experienced.

The baroque collective Solomon’s Knot, one of the exciting ensembles supported by Aldeburgh Music’s Open Space programme, has quickly achieved acclaim for the vitality and invention of its chamber performances, often performed without scores, of the great baroque oratorios.

Making full use of the freedom enabled by singing without scores, they breathe freshness and new drama into one of Bach’s great large-scale masterpieces.
