International Botanical Art Show & Live Demos

Specially Commissioned Botanical Artworks in celebration of Joseph Dalton Hooker.

Over 50 botanical artworks (many of which have been specially commissioned) by a group of leading international botanical artists are on display this July in Halesworth Art Gallery. The exhibition forms part of the town’s celebrations to mark the bicentenary of Joseph Dalton Hooker, who was born in Halesworth in 1817.

To celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker in Halesworth, the gallery has commissioned staff and the Alumni group ‘Amicus Botanicus’ from the Chelsea School of Botanical Art to create a series of paintings connected with plants discovered by Joseph Dalton Hooker.

He was possibly the greatest botanical explorer and plant collector of the 19th Century and a close friend of Charles Darwin.

These works are being exhibited alongside other contemporary botanical paintings by these leading artists. Some of the paintings have been specially flown in from Japan, Singapore and USA.

Overall, there are 50 artworks on display as well as a large range of prints.

In addition there will be live demonstrations in the gallery by some of the artists every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday throughout the exhibition:- Botanical Art is a unique discipline requiring specialised training and watercolour techniques, so this is a rare opportunity to see how the artists go about their craft and ask questions.
