Ancestors

'Ancestors' portrays the lives of real Suffolk characters from the past century; retelling their experiences and bringing to the stage the stories discovered by the descendants.

About the Show

Funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Land and Shore project worked with people at Dunwich, Lowestoft and Tattingstone to research and delve into the collections of Suffolk Archives and discover the stories of lost communities.

The research led to discoveries about the fascinating and sometimes tragic lives of their relatives and ancestors; from Lowestoft’s workhouse and the town’s long-lost Beach Village and, further afield, to Dunwich and even Canada!

Working with creative arts organisation the Voice cLoud and using the resources and archives of Lowestoft and Suffolk record office, these stories will be brought to life through dramatisations and song by professional actors and musicians, and some of the participants themselves.

This fascinating show is perfect for anyone interested in local and family history and the fascinating stories from towns and villages along The Suffolk Coast.

Tickets are £4 and available to book at www.theseagull.co.uk/event/ancestors or by calling 01502 589726.

About Land and Shore

Suffolk Archives has developed a countywide programme of activities which will engage more people than ever before with Suffolk’s archival heritage. One of the largest parts of the programme is the initiative called ‘Sharing Suffolk Stories’, which supports groups of people to learn more about where they live, create their own responses to it through art and literature, and share their work as widely as possible.

In early 2019, the Land and Shore project supported three groups of people based in Dunwich, Lowestoft and Tattingstone to delve into the collections of Suffolk Archives and discover the stories of lost communities.
