Discovery Session: A Ceremony of Carols and A Hymn at The Red House

The ever popular sessions led by Britten Pears Foundation's Lucy Walker.

In April 1942 Britten and Pears returned to the UK as part of a naval convoy after 3 years in the USA. While at sea, and under constant threat of attack, Britten nonetheless found inspiration to write two of his most popular choral works. A Ceremony of Carols is based on a book of verse he had found in Halifax, Nova Scotia while waiting to board; and A Hymn to St Cecilia is one of the last poems by WH Auden that Britten ever set.

You will listen to both pieces in their entirety, examine the structure and form of both, and discuss Britten’s skill in setting unusual texts to music.

Wednesday 28 November, 11am-12.30pm
