Discovery Session: Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo

These sessions offer an in-depth exploration of Benjamin Britten's works and themes covered in the 'Britten in America' exhibition.

Britten and Pears began their trip to the USA in 1939 as friends, but became romantically involved within a few weeks of arriving. From then on, Pears’ voice became the principle source of inspiration for Britten. Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo (1940), with its ardent, highly romantic texts, is the first song cycle composed for Pears and is a remarkable declaration of love as well as a tribute to Pears’ growing artistry.
