Easter Weekend at Snape Maltings

Snape Maltings Easter Weekend features two days of dramatic musical masterpieces performed by some of the country’s finest musicians, alongside a host of family-friendly activities around the site, including a special Easter Farmers' Market and Easter Egg hunt.

Good Friday, 30 March Albion Quartet - 12 noon, Orford Church.

The Albion Quartet pride themselves on performing lesser-known works within the string quartet repertoire. This performance features two of Dvorák’s surprisingly unsung quartets, exploring both his early and later writing, paired with Haydn’s ‘Emperor’ Quartet which boasts, perhaps, the best-known national anthem of all at its heart.

Bach: Mass in B Minor - 7.30pm, Snape Maltings The Gabrieli Consort and Players are one of this country’s standout early music ensembles. Under the baton of their Artistic Director Paul McCreesh, they appear to relish the spiritual and artistic challenges that Bach’s Mass in B Minor presents, as their rendition pares away centuries of performance tradition and reveals the emotional core that this monumental sacred masterpiece has to offer.

Saturday 31 MarchEaster Farmers' Market - 9.30am, Snape Maltings

Aldeburgh Voices - 3pm, Orford Church with a setting for double choir and string orchestra, James MacMillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross moves between whispered chant to shattering choral outbursts, in a profound and original reflection on the crucifixion.

Aldeburgh Voices are joined by The Suffolk Ensemble, and fellows of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain to present this gripping work.

Handel: Theodora - 7pm, Snape Maltings. Following on from public masterclasses with baroque specialists Christian Curnyn and Sarah Connolly, Handel’s dramatic tale of love, faith and courage, is brought to life by students of the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme. You could be forgiven for mistaking this piece for an opera, as the sheer emotional power of the story, combined with some of Handel’s most ravishing music, creates a sense of drama unlike any other baroque oratorio.

Alongside Snape's musical offerings, there will be a chocolate-filled Easter Egg Hunt throughout the weekend, and on Saturday there will be a special Easter Farmers’ Market, free art activities in the Concert Hall Cafe and live music around the site.
