Historia - Dr Catherine Hills: Wise Women, Saints or Princesses?

Burials of notable women in 7th century England.

Anglo-Saxon burials are known for their graves, furnished with jewellery and weapons. However, the practice of including grave goods was at its peak only in the sixth century. Exceptions are the rich male burials of the early part of the century, most notably those at Sutton Hoo, and a group of women's burials from the middle decades of the century. Who were the women buried in these graves? In this lecture ideas about the secular or religious status of these women will be explored.
