I AM FROM REKJAVIK - Sonia Hughes

A performance about race, about home and belonging, public space and ownership

Sonia Hughes will perform about ownership of herself and her ability to go about and take up as much space as she needs with as much of herself as she dares bring.

This is just a small story by way of illustration.

In 1965 Sonia's mum and dad book a holiday to the Isle of Wight; her mum’s pregnant with Sonia. Dad gets a bit wary and writes to the hotel saying that we’re coloured and would it cause any problems as they don’t want to travel all that way, what with mum’s condition, to be turned away.

The hotel writes back cancelling the reservation.

Sonia needs to unwrite both of those letters, so she is bringing her own teacups and building her own house.

Ipswich is invited to witness Sonia claim space in your town.

This performance is a SPILL Festival & Jerwood Arts, and LIFT and Royal Docks Team co-commission in partnership with Festspillene I Nord-Norge, SPRING Performing Arts Festival, ILT Festival and City Of London.
