Outdoor Theatre: Edith in the Beginning at Sutton Hoo

Make the most of those warm summer evenings by soaking up some incredible stories of amazing people, in the location where they took place. Edith Pretty is famously linked to the discovery of the Sutton Hoo treasure. But there was so much more to this remarkable woman.

Sutton Hoo is excited to be working with Stuff of Dreams Theatre Company, who specialise in producing new plays based around East Anglian history, this summer with a new drama production focussing on the life of Edith Pretty.

Edith Pretty is famously linked to the discovery of the Sutton Hoo treasure. But there was so much more to this remarkable woman. Staged on the porch of Mrs Pretty’s home, Tranmer House, the company will stage three outdoor performances of the new play by writer Karen Forbes over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

It was her actions, an incredible decision made on the eve of war, which led to one of the most significant discoveries ever made in this country. She was a well-educated, strong woman and it’s an honour to be able to explore her story in more depth in this year, the 80th anniversary of the discovery of the Great Ship Burial and the year in which Sutton Hoo completes the 'Releasing the Sutton Hoo Story' project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and supporters, which is all about sharing the stories of the people who have shaped this precious landscape.
