The Lost Words - Spell Songs

Musical companion to the captivating nature book

‘Once upon a time, words began to vanish from the language of children. They disappeared so quietly that at first almost no one noticed – fading away like water on a stone…’ The Lost Words is a unique and astonishing book of poems and illustrations by acclaimed nature-writer Robert Macfarlane and illustrator Jackie Morris. It began as a response to the removal of everyday nature words such as ‘acorn’ and ‘wren’ from a widely used children’s dictionary and grew to become a much broader protest at the loss of the natural world around us. It is also a celebration of the creatures and plants with which we share our lives.

Spell Songs is a new musical companion piece to The Lost Words. Eight remarkable and diverse musicians respond to the creatures, art and language of the book and sing nature back to life through the power of poetry, art and magic, weaving together elements of British folk music, Senegalese folk traditions, experimental and classical music, to create an inspiring new body of work.

The debut performance at Snape Maltings Concert Hall will feature live painting by Jackie Morris and is sure to appeal to music and nature lovers alike.

‘The Lost Words is a beautiful book and, in terms of ideas, an important one.’ – The Guardian
