Thorpeness too is a fascinating seaside village, built in the 1920s by Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie, an architect, barrister and playwright, whose great friend, J M Barrie, (the author of Peter Pan) and the reason why The Thorpeness Meare has Wendy's House and the Dragons Den to name but a few of his characters depicted on the many islands.

The mock Tudor style of building is now the hallmark of Thorpeness, where the amenities include the Dolphin Inn, the Thorpeness Hotel with its 18-hole golf course, a Country Club with tennis courts and the Thorpeness Meare where in August, a regatta is staged with rowing boat races, sailing and a carnival procession 'ON THE MEARE' with decorated punts followed by a wonderful fireworks display which is reflected in the water above the Meare to end the week... an occasion not to be missed!!

The nearby beaches, (a 5-minute walk from No 9 The Whinlands), are mainly sandy and behind the Meare and village are a myriad of footpaths over heath and common land. RSPB Minsmere and the Snape Maltings Concert Hall are just a few miles drive away.
