Iken Canoe

Iken Canoe hires out Canadian canoes, sit-on-top kayaks and stand up paddleboards (SUPs) on the stunning upper reaches of the River Alde between Snape and Aldeburgh, close to the Suffolk coast.

Explore this wonderful stretch of river at your leisure. Discover creeks and flood waters, or gently glide with the tide at low water and get up close to seals basking on the mud banks as well as observing a multitude of different wading birds.

Use of equipment can be arranged, from a short hire of one hour or more for a stand-up paddleboard, and two to four hours in a 3-man canoe, 2- or 1-person kayak. All craft are suitable for a wide range of skill levels and are ideal for couples, groups or family outings.

There are also two 'Katakanus' - very stable 6-person canoe-catamarans for families or friends.

New for 2020 is small motorised dinghy hire (five people max) and the availability of a classic 21ft gaff-rigged Cornish Shrimper sailing boat for charter (maximum four people with one person having sufficient previous sailing experience).

Buoyancy aids, paddles and dry bags are all included. Iken Canoe will also provide you with a full safety briefing, a map and suggestions as to where you might explore while on the river.

Times of hire are flexible due to use of a pontoon, so that launch and return times are not reliant on tide height.

On its 18-mile journey down to the sea from Snape Bridge, the River Alde passes some of the most significant coastal marshland sites for birds in the country. Avocet, marsh harrier, curlew and god-wit are often seen, as well as many more species.

Other wildlife can also be spotted, such as otters (by the very keenest of eyes) and seals are regularly seen basking on the mud banks.

Iken Canoe is open every day between April and October (weather permitting) and is also available for corporate bookings.
