Iken Canoe

Iken Canoe is a small and friendly canoe, kayak and stand up paddleboard hire centre based on the stunning upper reaches of the Alde estuary between Snape and Aldeburgh, close to the Suffolk coast.

Hiring out Canadian canoes, sit-on-top kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) for people to explore this wonderful stretch of river at their leisure. Discover creeks and flood waters, or gently glide with the tide at low water and get up close to seals basking on the mud banks as well as observing a multitude of different wading birds.

Use of equipment can be arranged, from a short hire of one hour or more for a stand-up paddleboard, and two to four hours in a 3-man canoe, 2-man kayak or 1-man kayak. All craft are suitable for a wide range of skill levels and are ideal for couples, groups or family outings.

New for 2019, there are two Katakanus - 6-person boats for families, friends or workmates.

Buoyancy aids, paddles and dry bags are all included. Iken Canoe will also provide you with a full safety briefing, a map and suggestions as to where you might explore while on the river.

Times of hire are flexible as there is a path and pontoon across the mud so that launch and return times are not reliant on tide height.

On its 18-mile journey down to the sea from Snape Bridge, the River Alde passes some of the most significant coastal marshland sites for birds in the country. Avocet, marsh harrier, curlew and godwits are often seen, as well as many more species.

Other wildlife can also be spotted, such as otters (by the very keenest of eyes) and seals are regularly seen basking on the mud banks.
