Historia - Dr Sue Harrington: Women and cloth in Early Anglo-Saxon England: a feminist perspective at Sutton Hoo

This lecture explores the role of high status women in the production of cloth, a key economic staple. An association of women with cloth production in the domestic sphere appears to be supported by the evidence from burial in Early Anglo-Saxon England. This lecture reviews the cloth and tools from a range of burials to assess the viability of such a proposition in the context of emerging state societies of the sixth and seventh centuries. A different perspective emerges that foregrounds the role of high status women in the production of a key economic staple.
