As Valentine's Day approaches, there’s love in the coastal air! If you’re looking for the perfect spot to pop the question or a picturesque location to declare your love then look no further than these romantic spots along The Suffolk Coast.
1. The UK’s most easterly point
Ness Point, or Lowestoft Ness is the UK’s most Easterly point and a very special place to get down on one knee. Visit early in the morning to sync your perfect moment with the breathtaking sunrise, seeing in the momentous day earlier than anyone else in the country - truly a sight to remember.
Alternatively, take each other’s hands and make footprints in the sand on Lowestoft’s stunning, sandy beach. The lapping waves and blue skies setting the scene for love and the brisk winds acting as the perfect excuse to pull your partner closer.
2. The wall walk at Framlingham Castle
A magnificent place for a historic moment in your love story; Framlingham Castle is an imposing 12th century castle surrounded by lush parklands and estates and reverberating with a rich and fascinating past. Take a stroll around the curtain wall surrounding the castle and enjoy the fantastic views of Framlingham mere and the surrounding countryside, from 10.5 metres high, pausing only when the moment is right to ask the all important question. Capture the perfect moment with some excellent panoramic photos, creating a memory to treasure for years to come.
3. At the end of Southwold Pier
If you want a cheeky spot for a seaside romance, take a nostalgic promenade along Southwold’s iconic pier. A popular spot for courting lovers in the 1800’s, today’s pier is a charming place to eat, drink, shop and giggle together in the salty sea air.
Drop into the ‘Under the pier show’ and discover an eccentric collection of automatons created by genius inventor Tim Hunkin and don’t forget to get a picture in the wacky photobooth on your way out. Pop the question and maybe pop a cork to celebrate, along with a delicious meal at The Boardwalk Restaurant, with marvellous views of the crashing waves. As a romantic gesture, why not purchase a commemorative plaque and mount it for all to see on the Pier itself as many people in love have done before.
4. On a boat on the River Waveney
"There is a little river, fed by rills
That winds among the hills,
And turns and suns itself unceasingly,
And wanders through the cornfields wooingly,
For it has nothing else to do, but play
Along its cheery way."
So says the poet Jean Ingelow of the River Waveney, a waterway which has captured the hearts of many a romantic soul. Wind your own way along the flowing waters in a day boat hired from Hippersons Boatyard in Beccles taking in the wildlife, flora and fauna along the way. Couples with a sense of adventure will love this chance to run away together, navigating the way amongst the grasses and bullrushes of these stunning waterways.
5. Felixstowe Seafront Gardens
With your affections in full bloom, Felixstowe Seafront Gardens are an apt setting to ask for your loved one’s hand in marriage. Sitting on the cliffs between the town centre and the beach, these grade II listed gardens are sumptuously planted with fragrant roses, bluebells, crocus’ and lavender, alongside shrubs, bushes and even water lilies, with some of the original planting still surviving to this day.
The whole garden is fed by the natural spring waters occurring along the cliff and offers an elegant place to stop and take in the views. There are benches and shelters- perfect for a picnic or perhaps some champagne and strawberries.
