From the much-loved First Light Festival in Lowestoft to peaceful dawn gatherings and unforgettable sunrise experiences, here are some of the best ways to greet the first light of summer on the Suffolk Coast.

Celebrate the Solstice at First Light Festival

There's no better place to welcome the longest day of the year than Lowestoft, the UK's most easterly town and the first place to see the sunrise. Taking place across the 20th and 21st June, First Light Festival celebrates the Summer Solstice with two days of live music, comedy, spoken word, art and family-friendly entertainment, all set against the backdrop of Lowestoft beach.

From internationally acclaimed musicians and thought-provoking talks to striking art installations and the unique opportunity to camp on the beach, the festival is a joyful celebration of creativity, community and the arrival of summer. Whether you're catching the first rays of the day or dancing long into the evening, First Light Festival is a truly unforgettable way to embrace the season.

Welcome the Sunrise at the Summer Solstice Dawn Celebration

Experience the magic of sunrise from the first place in the UK to greet the new day at the Summer Solstice Dawn Celebration. Set on Lowestoft's South Beach, this unforgettable early morning gathering brings together music, mindfulness and community as the sun rises over the North Sea.

The celebrations begin at 4am with Jason Singh's Suraj, an immersive soundscape inspired by the morning raga Bhairav, blending nature recordings with live vocal percussion to accompany the first light of day. As dawn approaches, join a Sun Salutation yoga session on the beach before enjoying Shells & Bells, a specially created sunrise performance by First Light Festival's musician-in-residence, Steve Pretty.

The morning continues with Tendertwin, whose specially commissioned performance for Britten Pears Arts and First Light Festival honours the connection between Lowestoft, Aldeburgh and the legacy of Benjamin Britten. Round off the celebration with the ever-popular Fish Feast Breakfast, featuring fresh local seafood served just moments after sunrise. It's a truly special way to welcome the longest day of the year.

Greet the Sunrise with Britten Pears Arts' Dawn Chorus

For a truly memorable start to the longest day of the year, join Britten Pears Arts for its annual Solstice Sunrise: Dawn Chorus. Taking place at 4.15am on both Aldeburgh Beach and Lowestoft Beach, this much-loved tradition celebrates the Summer Solstice with live music as the sun rises over the Suffolk coast.

This year's event features the world premiere of Sea Spirals by Bilge Nur Yilmaz (Tendertwin), a specially commissioned work performed simultaneously across the two beaches. Inspired by the beginning and end of Benjamin Britten's life, the companion performances create a unique musical connection between his birthplace of Lowestoft and his beloved Aldeburgh.

Free to attend and open to everyone, it's a wonderfully peaceful way to experience sunrise, with hot drinks and breakfast baps available to purchase afterwards. Whether you choose the lively atmosphere of Lowestoft or the tranquillity of Aldeburgh's shoreline, it's a magical way to welcome the first light of summer.

Embrace the Solstice with a Forest Bathing Experience at Sutton Hoo

If you're looking for a quieter way to celebrate the Summer Solstice, begin the longest day of the year with a peaceful Forest Bathing session at Sutton Hoo. Taking place just after dawn, this guided experience invites you to slow down and reconnect with nature in the beautiful pine woodland surrounding one of Suffolk's most iconic landscapes.

Led by local Forest Bathing Guide Charlotte Atkinson, the two-hour session encourages mindfulness through gentle sensory activities and a meditative walk beneath the trees. The experience concludes with a calming tea ceremony, leaving you feeling refreshed, grounded and ready to welcome the new season.

Climb Southwold Lighthouse for a Solstice Sunrise

Watch the first rays of the Summer Solstice from one of Suffolk's most iconic landmarks with a special Sunrise Lighthouse Tour at Southwold Lighthouse. Taking place on the morning of 21st June, this unique experience offers the chance to climb the 113 steps to the top of the historic lighthouse and witness breathtaking panoramic views as the longest day of the year begins.

Built in 1890 and still guiding ships today, Southwold Lighthouse provides a spectacular vantage point over the coastline, town and surrounding countryside.
