IBTC in Lowestoft offers a variety of boatbuilding/maintenance and woodworking courses suitable for those looking for a career in the maritime industry as well as individuals wanting to develop existing or new interests and skills.
With courses from 1 day to almost a year there is something to offer everyone; from owners and enthusiasts to prospective tradespersons.
The International Boatbuilding Training College is proud to offer a wide range of traditional boatbuilding and joinery courses together with shorter courses exploring additional woodworking skills and maritime crafts.
Originally set up in 1975 to train workers for the boatyards of Norfolk and Suffolk, IBTC's graduates go on to manage yards all over the world. Internationally recognised, they are City & Guilds approved. Additionally, they are an accredited training centre for the RYA.
The courses on offer provide the opportunity to work on a wide variety of boats, large and small, and at different stages of construction. Although a college, due to the way in which training is provided, the overall atmosphere is of a working boatyard offering a complete 'hands on' experience to all those who attend, vital for those looking to a career in boatbuilding.
All courses teach essential skills that can be transferred to careers outside of boatbuilding such as green frame timber construction, conservation building work and furniture making. Of course, you may want to learn new skills for the sheer pleasure of it. Your options are endless, whatever your existing skill level and interest the IBTC has a course for you.
