Literature by the Sea in Felixstowe

The Felixstowe Book Festival is now in its fourth year and promises to be the biggest and best yet.

Based in the town centre at The Orwell Hotel and Felixstowe Library, the event attracts renowned local authors as well as avid bookworms, all eager to share their passion for the written word.

The Felixstowe Book Festival has become one of the highlights of the East Anglian Arts Calendar with its Patron, Esther Freud, singing its praises, “A flourishing festival, with a programme to catch the imagination.”

There’s a diverse mix of events that covers everything from politics to sport, crime fiction to romance – appealing to those that have their head buried in a book and those who haven’t yet fully experienced the wonder of reading.

The Festival takes place on 25th and 26th June and hosts numerous events covering crime, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, workshops and young people – something for everyone’s literary tastes.

Highlights include:

Saturday 25th June
9.30-10.30am
Elizabeth Suite, The Orwell Hotel, Felixstowe

Tickets: £8 (£6)

Giles Merritt Slippery Slope

The aim of Slippery Slope is to set alarm bells ringing across Europe with its revealing insights into our increasingly troubled future. Giles Merritt sets out to sort fact from fiction in his analysis of Europe’s weaknesses, and the policies needed to address them. Placing the outlook for Europe in its global context, he assesses Europe’s decline in relative as well as absolute terms, and puts forward an ambitious but realistic ‘to do’ list for Europe’s policymakers, if our comparatively privileged life styles are not to be seriously threatened in coming years. Chaired by Richard Walker.

Daniel Hahn

The last thirty years have transformed the world of children’s literature. They have brought us picture books like The Gruffalo, gritty ‘young adult’ fiction and everything in between, not least a certain boy wizard called Harry Potter. These much-loved books and thousands more feature in the new Oxford Companion to Children’s Literature, the editor of which will be joining us to discuss their enduring appeal. Daniel will be in conversation with writer, former bookseller and lifelong reader Julia Jones.

Best-sellers like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Shadow of the Wind have been among British readers’ favourites in recent years. Liz Calder FlipSide comes to Felixstowe!

We all know Brazilians are mad about football, and that they have great beaches and musicians and Carnival. But who are the great Brazilian writers, novelists, poets? 15 years she has been involved in FLIP, Brazil’s pioneering literary festival.
