11 Ways to Enjoy an Indian Summer

There’s something rather lovely about those unexpected sunny days at the tail end of summer. When the evenings are still warm, the skies are blue and autumn hasn’t quite arrived, it’s the perfect excuse to get outside and make the most of The Suffolk Coast. From seaside adventures and river trips to outdoor swims and wildlife encounters, here are seven ways to enjoy an Indian summer before the seasons change.

Get wild at Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park

Make the most of the sunshine with a day at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park, where rare-breed farm animals meet some rather more exotic residents. Home to more than 100 species and breeds, the park is known for everything from pigs and reindeer to camels, primates, tapirs and crocodiles, as well as Europe’s largest polar bear reserve. There are animal talks and activities throughout the day, and opportunities to get closer to some of the residents too.

Once you’ve said hello to the animals, explore the 100-acre woodland, wander through the colourful butterfly house or let the little ones loose on the giant sandpit, adventure play and bouncy pillows. Finish up with a browse around the Farm Shop for local treats, making this an easy way to spend a sunny day in the Suffolk countryside.

A day by the sea at Southwold

Take advantage of an unexpected sunny spell with a stroll along Southwold's beach and breezy promenade, before settling on the golden sands for a spot of digging, paddling or, if you’re feeling brave, a dip in the sea. The quirky Pier is well worth a wander too, with its eccentric water clock, Wacky Walk of Mirrors and wonderfully weird ‘Under the Pier Show’ packed with Tim Hunkin’s ingenious machines.

Back in town, browse the independent shops and nautical-inspired homewares before treating yourself to an ice cream from Harris & James Store Southwold. And if you’re in the mood to make a day of it, round things off with a tour of Adnams Brewery, right in the heart of town.

Sail the River Alde

When you’re ready to swap the pool for the river, hop aboard Big Dog Ferry for a leisurely three-mile trip along the Waveney to Geldeston Locks. Stay aboard for the return journey or hop off at The Locks Inn for a drink, bite to eat and a wander along the riverside.

Wander through Helmingham Hall Gardens

For a slower-paced way to enjoy an Indian summer, spend a few hours wandering through the spectacular Grade I Listed gardens at Helmingham Hall. Set within 400 acres of Suffolk countryside, the gardens are at their best between May and September, with a beautiful parterre, colourful walled kitchen garden, rose garden and herb and knot gardens to explore. Designed by renowned garden designer Xa Tollemache, there’s plenty to discover as you wander between the carefully planted borders and peaceful garden spaces.

Take your time over a coffee or something to eat at Wright’s Café, then browse the Stable Shops for local produce, gifts and garden goodies before heading home. The gardens also host a programme of events throughout the year, making it well worth checking what’s on during your visit.

Boating on the Broads

Sunny days are best enjoyed by boat and Oulton Broads are renowned for being the best place to explore all that boating has to offer. Famous for being the largest protected wetlands in Britain and a recognised National Park, the broads offer a nautical adventure for budding sailors of all ages. Beach Street also hosts markets and events throughout the year, while the landscaped site is wheelchair and buggy accessible and dogs on leads are welcome.

Head to Lowestoft’s East Point Pavilion for sea views, good food and a lively programme of events. This year-round seafront spot brings together independent street-food traders, barista coffee, craft beer, wine and cocktails, with plenty of seating for lingering over lunch or a drink while watching the waves.

There’s also a packed calendar of live music, DJs, performances, artisan markets, vintage fairs and creative workshops, so there’s usually something happening beyond the food and drink.
